Hello Climbers and Parents

Following up on the e-mail sent by Sebastian yesterday, we have taken a look at the results from both Regional Championships and have determined that ALL climbers who competed at the Regional Championships will qualify for the National Championships over the Canada Day weekend. This also includes those who have been granted exemptions.

There is no requirement to respond to this e-mail. As Sebastian indicated, online registration, via the CEC website, will be available within the next week to 10 days. If you intend to compete at Nationals, simply register for the event online. For those who did not register online for the Regional Championships, you will require the Climber’s (not Parent’s) User ID and Password to register. This information will have been e-mailed to you when you obtained your membership.

Points results from both Regional Championships should be posted on the CEC website shortly. For those not aware of the changes made this year, Canada Youth Cup and National Team points are based solely on results from the Regional and National Championships, which explains why the updated points standings will be based on results from the Regional Championships.

Dad had arranged that we get picked up from the airport to go to our hotel. I felt like royalty. They had our names on signs and we were walking the red carpet.

Mon père avait fait les arrangements qu'on se fasse rencontrer à l'aéroport pour se rendre à l'hôtel. Ces personnes portaient des enseignes inscrites avec nos noms et nous marchions sur un tapis rouge. Je me croyais comme un membre de la royauté.

During our stay I found out that Ecuador is a very poor country. Ecuador is filled with beautiful mountains. The Ecuadorians live in half built houses. We are sure lucky here in Canada. Though they live near the Equator you would think that it would be very hot all the time, in the evening it is very cool.

Pendant notre séjour, j'ai appris qu'Ecuador est un pays très pauvre. Ecuador est rempli de belles montagnes. Les gens demeurent dans des maisons à moitié construites. Nous sommes chanceux ici au Canada. Malgré le fait qu'ils demeurent près de l'équateur, on pense qu'il ferait très chaud à tout temps mais c'est très frais pendant la soirée.

I enjoyed my time there and learn so much about their country. The people were so friendly, even when we were competing against them. Unfortunately November is their rainy season and I found it very hard to climb. I received a bronze metal in speed climbing, 4th in bouldering and sixth in top rope.

J'ai beaucoup jouis de ma visite et j'ai tellement appris à propos de leur pays. Les gens étaient très gentils même quand que nous étions en compétition avec eux. Malheureusement le mois de novembre est la saison des pluies et j'ai trouvé d'escalader très difficile. J'ai reçu la médaille bronze en escalade à vitesse, je suis arrivée 4e en bouldering et 6e en top rope.

I look forward to see all my friends again one day. I will never forget our amazing trip.

J'attends avec impatience de revoir tous mes amis à l'avenir proche. Je garderai toujours dans mon coeur mes belles expériences de notre voyage inoubliable.

Being able to travel to Ecuador and compete was an awesome experience for someone young like me. The competition was really tough. It was the first time that I competed on an outside wall in the rain with long delays. It taught me to expect the unexpected and to be better prepared. It was really exciting meeting and competing with kids from all over the world. I also really enjoyed being able to explore Ecuador - to see the amazing mountains and the cities. I found the people had very interesting life styles. I hope to travel to more places around the world - to meet even more interesting people and compete at many more competitions.

Être en mesure de Voyage à l'Équateur et la concurrence a été une expérience incroyable pour quelqu'un de jeune comme moi. La compétition a été vraiment difficile. C'était la première fois que j'ai participé sur un mur extérieur sous la pluie avec de longs retards. Il m'a appris à s'attendre à l'inattendu et d'être mieux préparés. C'était vraiment excitant de réunion et de concurrence avec les enfants de partout dans le monde. J'ai aussi beaucoup apprécié de pouvoir explorer l'Équateur - pour voir le magnifique décor de montagne et les villes. J'ai trouvé les gens avaient des styles de vie très intéressante. J'espère de voyager à d'autres endroits dans le monde afin de rencontrer encore plus de personnes intéressantes et de concurrencer à beaucoup plus d'autres compétitions.

In late October we were a bit concerned that the Pan American Championships in Ecuador would even take place, considering the recent political turmoil there. But we were hopeful and booked our travel plans anyway for what turned out to be an awesome trip for Courtney Belleau and Ben Whattam, who were selected to represent Canada in their respective Girls and Boys D categories.

Nous ne savions à quoi nous attendre lorsque nous planifions notre voyage au championnat panaméricain en Équateur à la fin du mois d’octobre passé. Sachant que le pays était en tumulte politique, nous continuons les démarches pour ce voyage et ce fut une des meilleures expériences pour Courtney Belleau et Ben Whattam !

They were the only kids from Ontario that were representing Canada in what was the first ever Pan American Youth Championships, being held in Ibarra Ecuador. There was also Yoann Arpin from Quebec, and that made up our Eastern Canada participation in the competition.

Ces deux athlètes étaient les seuls ontariens choisis pour représenter le Canada dans la catégorie D à Ibarra en Équateur. Avec Yoann Arpin du Québec sur l’équipe, l’est du Canada fut bien représenté !

Given that the climbing venue in Ibarra was over 7000 ft elevation, and our fly in point of Quito was 10000 ft elevation, we had decided to plan our trip a week prior to the event in order to acclimate to the elevations of the region. And we were glad we did!

Située au pied du volcan Imbarura, l’altitude de Ibarra était de 2 225 m, (ce qui en fait un des plus hauts sommets du monde !) nous étions heureux d’avoir planifié notre arrivée une semaine avant la compétition !

Ben and Courtney were great little world travelers, for the trip. We left Toronto in the late afternoon, and arrived in Quito about midnight. After working our way though what seemed like an endless line through Ecuador customs, we were met by our driver of the hotel. After check in we carried our bags to the third floor, where reaching the top I was gasping for air! I remember thinking as I fell to my bed panting “Where did all the air go?” I sure was glad we planned to be here at elevation for a while before the competition. I would have hated to come all this way, just to have the kids simply be out of breath trying to climb the simplest routes!

Ben et Courtney ont voyagé comme des grands ! Nous avions quitté Toronto en après-midi pour arriver à Quito vers minuit. Après avoir passé les douanes, nous nous sommes rendus à l’hôtel très tôt ce matin-là. Notre chambre était au troisième plancher et je m’étais dit, « où est allé l’air ». Heureusement, nous avions planifié notre arrivée bien avant le début de la compétition. Ce serait de valeur si nos enfants avaient tout simplement manqué d’air lors d’une paroi simple !

Over the next week we had toured Quito, gone to La Mitad del Mundo (The Middle of the World), gone rafting down a mountain river, rappelled down a waterfall, and spent three days in the Ecuadorian Cloud forest.

Lors de notre première semaine, nous avons profité pleinement de notre visite. Nous avons visité la mitad del mundo (le centre du monde), fait du rafting sur une rivière, rappeler des chutes et avons passé trois jours dans la forêt amazonienne d'Équateur.

The day before the competition had finally arrived – and we were ready!

Our guide for the cloud forest had driven us about 2 hours to Ibarra, where we had arrived at the hotel one day before the Canada climbing team. We quickly checked in and then walked a couple of blocks down the street to checkout the outdoor climbing venue. It was awesome!

The venue had two main structures. The first was a huge blue tower at about 60’ tall, with Mazda painted on the side. There was more climbing space on the Mazda tower then any gym we have seen in Ontario! The second was a large odd looking featured 360° structure for bouldering, which was about 20 foot high. It had many nooks and slabs at all angles. While we were at the fence admiring the venue, the lead route setter came to the fence to meet us. He was very friendly and spoke great English. He was very excited about the first ever Pan-American Youth Championships!

Notre guide nous avait débarqué à l’hôtel une journée avant l’arrivée de l’équipe canadienne. Dès notre arrivée, nous sommes allées sonder le parcours des voies et étudier les parois à grimper. La première tour était immense, 18 mètres en hauteur avec l’emblème de Mazda peinturé sur un côté. La deuxième tour était toute aussi impressionnante avec des angles bizarres. Le responsable des voies était un homme très sympathique et connaissant. Il parlait très bien l’anglais et était enchanté d’être hôte du premier championnat panaméricain.

Late afternoon the next day, the bus from Quito with the rest of Canadian Climbing team arrived. Everyone was excited to be there representing Canada.

Le lendemain, toute l’équipe canadienne arriva et tous ces athlètes étaient tellement fiers de représenter le Canada.

Later that night there was to be an opening ceremony to kick off the first Pan-American Youth Championships, but the rain started. It turned out that the rain became a formidable opponent for all the climbers for the remainder of the competition, as the climbing walls were outdoors, and we were just at the beginning of the Ecuador rain season. Due to the rain, the opening ceremony was cancelled. All the kids on the Canada team gathered together later that night to receive the wisdom and guidance of the national coaches, to prepare them for the start of the competition the next day. The kids went to bed with dreams of winning gold medals for Canada in their thoughts.

Lors des cérémonies d’ouverture, la pluie commence à tomber ! La cérémonie fut annulée donc, les athlètes se sont réunis dans une chambre pour écouter au message inspirant des entraîneurs de l’équipe. Ils sont partis se coucher en rêvant qu’à une seule chose…de remporter la médaille d’or !

We arrived at the competition wall early on the first day of competitions. We were very excited to be representing Canada, and the kids wore their Canada team shirts with pride. It was great to see all the athletes from Ecuador, Argentina, USA, Mexico, and Venezuela, start to arrive. This was going to be a monumental experience for Courtney and Ben!

Nous sommes arrivés au mur d’escalade très tôt le premier matin. Les athlètes étaient très nerveux et anticipaient la compétition avec anxiété. Ils portaient tous leurs chandails du Canada avec fierté ! Ce fut merveilleux de voir tous les athlètes de l’Équateur, de l’Argentine, des États-Unis, du Mexique et de la Venezuela arrivé au site. Quelle expérience inoubliable pour Courtney et Ben !

After the opening speeches, the game was on. It was inspiring to see everyone cheering on the competitors as they competed. In Spanish the cheer was Manga!-Manga!, the US was cheering Come on! – Come on!,… so us Canadians started cheering Allée!-Allée! The atmosphere was GREAT!, and friendly too! Even the other teams were cheering on their competitors. The rains stated again in late afternoon, but the little climbers still climbed on until the officials started closing off their routes! This set the standard over the next few days were the comp started, then was rained on.

Après les discours d’ouverture, c’est le jeu ! Nous étions tous inspirés du fait que chaque équipe encourageait les uns les autres. Les Espagnoles acclamaient Manga ! – Manga !, les Américains criaient Come on ! – Come on !, et les Canadiens disaient Allée ! – Allée ! L’atmosphère et le moral était incroyable ! Chaque compétiteur s’encourageait ! C’était merveilleux à entendre ! Malheureusement, la pluie recommence à tomber et les juges commencèrent à fermer les pistes et ce fut le même déroulement pour les prochains jours.

After the boulder competition, came Speed. Mark Eveleigh from Alberta had recently submitted an article to the Alpine Gazette, where he described that Canada “participates” in Speed and “not Competes”, as we do not train for speed in Canada (yet!). Well put Mark! In the Speed event Courtney was performing great and eventually had won the bronze for Speed, and Ben did great too.

Après la compétition de bloc…la compétition vitesse ! Mark Eveleigh de l’Alberta a bien dit dans l’article de la Gazette que les canadiens « participent » à la compétition de vitesse et non « compétitionnent « car les canadiens ne s’entraînent pas encore pour cette catégorie. Tout de même, Courtney s’est méritée une médaille de bronze et Ben a bien représenter l’équipe.

The next competition was difficulty. The routes were longer than Courtney or Ben have ever experienced at about 50 ft. Both the kids did awesome! We loved all the cheering from all the participating countries in the Pan Am’s! Manga!-Manga!, Allée!-Allée!, Go–Go! It was a good time for all.

La prochaine compétition était la voie difficulté. Les voies étaient plus longues que Ben et Courtney avaient jamais essayé, 15 mètres ! Malgré ce fait, les deux ont très bien réussi. Nous avons adoré le fait que tout le monde nous encourageait. Nous entendions Manga ! – Manga !, Allée ! – Allée !, Go ! – Go ! C’était incroyable !

On the last day of the competition, the kids from all the participating countries started trading their team shirts. Even though there was a language barrier, you could see everyone was becoming friends.

La dernière journée, tous les athlètes de chaque pays s’échangeaient leurs chandails même s’il ne comprenait pas la langue. C’était évidant que l’amitié régnait !

We had a terrific time representing Canada in the Pan American Championships. We made many friends not only in South America, but also with the great bunch of kids from out west in Canada. This was a trip to be remembered for Courtney and Ben, and they were happy and proud to be representing Canada.

Ce fut un véritable plaisir pour nous de représenter le Canada lors du premier championnat panaméricain ! Cette compétition a permis à Courtney et Ben de se tisser les amitiés avec plusieurs nouveaux amis. Ils seront toujours reconnaissants des liens qu’ils ont créés en Amérique autant qu’à l’ouest du Canada. Ils n’oublieront jamais cette expérience et la fierté qu’ils ressentaient lors de ce championnat.

We look forward to the next Pan American Championships, where we hope to attend and meet up with our new friend once again. We are also very excited to be attending the Nationals in Victoria BC this July, where we will once again meet up with the awesome kids, and parents from the other side of Canada!

This year has been an amazing year of growth for Ontario youth climbing. We have seen a surge in the number of climbers and local competitions. With the implementation of the first ever Ontario Youth Series (U20), and the formation of the Ontario Climbing Federation, the logical next step was to host our own Provincial Championships. True North Climbing was eager to become the first host of this extremely exciting venture. This weekend, True North was buzzing with excitement as competitors climbed their way to becoming Provincial Bouldering Champions, Provincial Difficulty Champions and U20 Series Cup winners. The CEC is offering a Judges Course on April 15, in conjunction with the 2011 Canadian Bouldering Championships in Toronto at Climber’s Rock from April 16-17, 2011.

The CEC is proud to announce that the IFSC has awarded the 2013 Youth World Championships to Canada. The announcement was made at this weekends IFSC meetings in Rome, Italy. The event will be hosted at the newly expanded Boulders Climbing Gym in Saanich, BC.

It is the first time that the Youth Worlds will be held in North America! Many thanks to Kimanda Jarzebiak and her support community for all the work in putting together the bid.

It is an exciting time to be involved in competition climbing in Canada!

A group of volunteers met on November 15, 2010 and has agreed to form a Provincial Climbing Organization in Ontario. This group is happy to announce that True North Climbing will be hosting the inaugural U20 Ontario Youth Climbing Championships on April 2 and 3, 2011.

Youth climbers from across Ontario will have an opportunity to compete in their age/gender category in bouldering, difficulty and speed climbing at these championships. There will also be an overall series award for the climber(s) with the most points in each age/gender category in the U20 (Ontario under 20) Series.

U20 Series Awards Requirements:

1) Competitors will be ranked in their age/gender category based on their Top 4 U20 season results.
2) U20 Championships may count as 2 results, 1 for bouldering and 1 for difficulty.
3) Speed climbing will be an exhibition discipline at the 2011 U20 Championships, and will not count in any way towards the series rankings or requirements.
4) Competitors must use at least one result from both disciplines of bouldering and difficulty. (*Boulderz Triclops will be considered a bouldering competition)
5) Competitors must have a CEC membership, but it need not be a competitive membership.
6) Competitors must participate in the 2011 U20 Championships in at least one discipline to be eligible to win the series. (However, their result(s) at the Championships does not have to be one of their ‘Top 4’ results.)
7) Competitors in the three older age/gender categories may choose to top rope at a local difficulty event that offers both top roping and lead climbing to competitors. However, those results may not be used towards the series rankings. (This restriction does not apply to competitors in the two younger age/gender categories, as they would all be top roping at any local difficulty event. This restriction does not apply at a difficulty event that offers only top roping to competitors in the three older age/gender categories.)
8) The competitor’s best result(s) at the U20 Championships will be used as the tiebreaker if there are two or more competitors tied at the end of the series.
9) Results for all locals and the U20 Championships will be weighted the same.
10) Results may be be counted from any CEC sanctioned local (which includes Tour de Bloc) in Ontario this season or from the U20 Championships (except Tour de Bloc Nationals, which occur after the U20 championships).
11) Series points from Ontario Tour de Bloc events will be awarded based upon a comparison of the scores from the redpoint portion of that event, including the redpoint score of any U20 competitors who competed in the Open category of that event. (This will not affect age/gender category awards given out at each Tour de Bloc event.)
12) Climbers do not have to be residents of Ontario as long as they meet all the requirements.

** U20 rankings are independent of the CEC’s ranking for local comps. **
Points will be tracked and posted on the U20 web site.

As members of the Canadian National Youth Climbing Team, Ontario's Ben Whattam (Boys 11 and under) and Courtney Belleau (Girls 11 and under) will be competing in the Pan American Youth Championships in Ibarra, Ecuador, November 23-28, 2010.

This year I along with 23 other athletes was honoured to represent Canada at the 2010 World Youth Championships in Edinburgh, Scotland. The competition was held at the Edinburgh International Climbing Arena in Ratho and the climbing spanned over four days. We were lucky to have three coaches and three team officials join us for this incredible experience.

When I first arrived at the arena I was blown away by how smoothly everything happened. It was like clockwork! The staff and volunteers were welcoming and helpful and they allowed us, the athletes, to have a stress-free competition. This being said, the appearance of the gym took the cake for most impressive. The facility is huge with an enormous variety of angles, including a 60 metre articulated wall. Unfortunately, I did not get the opportunity to climb on the main competition wall, but rather the old competition wall, which is even bigger with every triangular panel of the wall at a different angle. This allowed for the third lead wall to be available for warm-up, an extremely helpful aspect of our competition preparation.

This was my first year competing at World Championships and my experience was a huge opportunity to learn the mindset and physical preparation involved in such a big competition. I can’t wait for next year when I can perform at my best, as well as know what to expect.

Huge thank you to our coaches Chris, Jamie, Sean and Dung and to the team officials Kimanda and Iain. Also congratulations to all the team members especially Elan who on his first Worlds made it to semi-finals! Can’t wait for more competition fun!

The 2010 World Youth Championships held in Edinburgh, Scotland (September 9-12) was incredible! It was a great privilege and wonderful life experience for the 24 kids that made up the Canadian team. They were part of the 400+ competitors representing 39 different countries and it was evident in the quality of climbing that every one of those kids are dedicated athletes who train hard and love the sport. The host gym, EICA Ratho is the world’s largest indoor climbing gym and it was built by enclosing a section of a rock quarry. The gym was breathtaking. Words quite simply cannot do it justice – see the photos below.

This year a dedicated six-member team of four coaches and two officials chaperoned our kids during the Championship. The kids, coaches and officials stayed together in a local youth hostel. This new arrangement allowed the team the time to get to know each other and focus their collective energy and efforts on the Championship. That is not to say that they didn’t have lots of fun – they climbed together at a local gym, did some sightseeing, and I heard first hand accounts of the singing bus and sliding down the hill and other shenanigans with the French Team who were fellow hostellers. The coaches and officials warmed the kids up before each of their climbs, accompanied the kids to their climbs and reviewed their performance. I am happy to report that our team members were a close knit group that supported each other throughout the Championships and in good Canadian fashion both our athletes and parents, cheered on and supported climbers from all over the world.

As a parent the most wonderful aspect of Worlds is the opportunity for kids to meet fellow climbers from all over the world. The result of this opportunity was the trading of team t-shirts, and correspondence with new Facebook friends.

Congratulations to Elise Sethna and Elan Jonas-McRae for making semi-finals. While this was Elan’s first time at Worlds his performance was outstanding. With every climb Elan gained more confidence. He flashed his second qualifier and came very close to completing his semi-final climb with the entire arena cheering him on. Elan placed 11th in Boys Youth B.

A BIG thank you to the Canadian youth coaches (Jamie Chong, Sean McColl, Chris Neve and Dung Nugen) and officials (Kimanda Jarzebiak and Iain Stewart-Patterson) for all your hard work and dedication. You took time out of your busy schedules to help our kids realize their dreams.

So, 2011 Worlds will be held in Austria and 2012 Worlds will be in Singapore…

Edinburgh International Climbing Arena

Le championnat mondial de la jeunesse 2010 a pris place à Édimbourg, Écosse du 9 au 12 septembre. C’était un événement incroyable et un grand privilège pour les 24 jeunes Canadiens qui en ont fait partie. Les enfants Canadiens faisaient partie d’un groupe dépassant 400 participants représentant 39 pays. La qualité et la dédicacions des athlètes étaient évidente au cours des activités. Ces jeunes passent des heures a pratiquer pour perfectionner leur sport préférée : l’escalade. L’EICA Ratho, le plus grand centre intérieur de l’escalade, a accueillies les jeunes athlètes. Ce gymnase est reconnu car il a été bâti autour d’un grand escarpement de roches. Voici quelques photos démontrant la merveille de l’EICA Ratho.

Cette année, une équipe formée de 4 entraineurs et 2 administrateurs de l'équipe ont dédié leur temps pour accompagner les enfants. Les adultes et les jeunes ont logés dans une auberge à proximité. En restant ensemble, les jeunes athlètes en tant que les entraineurs ont pu mieux se connaitre et ont pu dédiées leur énergies envers le championnat. Le groupe au complet n’ont pas seulement participé au championnat ; ils ont eu plein de plaisir. Ils ont fait du tourisme, grimpé les rochers des gymnases locaux et ont participé a autres folle ries avec l’équipe française qui était loger à la même auberge. Avant chaque escalade les entraineurs imposa un échauffement. Aussi, les entraineurs étaient responsables d’accompagner les enfants à leur escalade et de réviser leur performance. En tenant une attitude Canadienne, nos athlètes s’encourageaient aussi bien qu’encourageant les membres des équipes compétitives.

Comme parent nous aimons que nos enfants puissent rencontrer d’autres jeunes d’autour du monde qui-comme eux-démontrent une passion pour l’escalade. Les enfants sont fait pleins d’amis. Les enfants ont échangés leur courriels électroniques et plusieurs vont maintenir leur amitié vis-à-vis le réseau social de « Facebook ».

De grands félicitations pour Élise Sethna et pour Élan Jonas-McRae pour l’avoir fait aux demi-finales. C’était la première participation d’Élan au championnat mondiale. Il a fait ça très bien! Avec chaque montée Élan démontrait de plus en plus de confiance. Élan finissait en prenant titre d’onzième de la ligue des Jeunes Garçons groupe B.

Un grand merci au entraineurs Canadiens : Jamie Chong, Sean McColl, Chris Neve, et Dung Nguyen. N’oublions pas les officiels : Kimanda Jarzebiak et Iain Stewart-Patterson. Vous avez pris le temps pour ces jeunes malgré vos horaires occupées ; merci à tous pour votre dédicacion et votre expertise. Vous avez aidé à nos enfants à réaliser leur rêve.

Le championnat mondial de la jeunesse 2011 prendra lieu en Autriche et celui de 2012 prendra place au Singapour. Alors à tous les enfants du monde: Rêvez grand et entrainez fort!

Délire centre d’escalade in Québec City hosted the C.E.C. Youth Nationals this year on the weekend of June 4, 5, and 6. This year 123 young athletes took part – most of them travelling from Western Canada.

The routesetters did an amazing job of separating the pack and no Super Finals were needed. Thank you to everyone who was part of the routesetting crew. We are grateful to True North’s own Dustin Curtis who flew to Québec to set routes, then dashed off to Vail, Colorado to represent Canada in the IFSC World Cup Bouldering Competition at the Teva Mountain Games. Also, we appreciate the support of all the gym owners who gave their setters time to work at Délire during that week.

The gym was well prepared for the onslaught of competitors, coaches and family members. It is well situated in a mall setting, convenient for food service, shops to keep moms busy and within 10 minutes drive to Old Québec City. The gym itself fit spectators comfortably and provided a unique setting to watch the climbing from the floor and mid way up the wall as well, in their balcony area.

The climbing …. Amazing, spectacular, inspiring to say the least! These kids were crushing some really hard routes. Pia Graham from Boulderz in Toronto wowed the crowd, first in the female Youth B Semi-finals when she seemed to get stronger with every move, then again in Finals when she was the last climber in her category to come out of ISO, and she climbed well past all of her competitors on that route. This route that was set for Junior, Youth A and B females, saw Pia climb the second furthest on it. A short time after Pia’s climb, the crowd went frantic as Elise Sethna, a Youth A climber from the Vsion in Canmore, was the only one to send the route. Elise is coming off a magnificent second place finish at Tour de Bloc Nationals in May. Only three climbers topped all of their routes this weekend; Elise Sethna - Youth A girls, Beth Vince from Peaks in St. Catharines - 12/13 girls, and Elan Jonas McRae - Youth B boys. Elan climbs at Romper Room in Nanaimo. In Speed climbing we saw some impressive results as well. The quickest up the wall was Miles Adamson (Youth A) from Edmonton, setting the gym’s Speed record of 6.95 seconds. Wow! I look forward to seeing Miles’ results at Worlds. It’s time that we recognized what the rest of the World already has, that competition climbing is comprised of three disciplines and Canada should be proud of all our climbers in Difficulty, Bouldering, and Speed. Many athletes travel to Internationally sanctioned competitions to compete in only one discipline. I look forward to next year’s Speed record. Keep training Miles!

We were sad to see that Eric Sethna’s injury was still bothering him and he was not able to compete. His track record stood though as he was selected as the wildcard member for the Junior Male Worlds’ team. The team heads to Edinburgh, Scotland for the IFSC World Youth Championships September 9-12, 2010.

Also decided this weekend were the Canada Youth Cup recipients. Last year the CEC instituted the Canada Youth Cups to recognize the outstanding achievements of young climbers. The climber in each age/gender category with the most points at the end of the season receives the Canada Youth Cup. They keep these trophies at their gym for the year and subsequent winners names are engraved each year as the Cups travel with the winners.

Summer... for many athletes it’s rest time which might include some leisurely climbing outdoors, or long awaited climbing vacations to exotic locales, but for others it means continued training for Worlds. The C.E.C. has organized a weekend training camp for the Worlds’ team athletes in Squamish B.C. They will have a chance to get to know their fellow competitors as well as climb in one of the most amazing places in Canada. It sounds like they have a wonderful weekend planned. If you aren’t on the Worlds’ team there are still some great summer activities to look forward to. Already, only a few days after Nationals and I’m noticing new friendships popping up on Facebook between East and West. What other sport sees competitors, family members and coaches cheering for opponents? As people join our small community that is always something that comes up in conversation. Parents are amazed at the familial approach to the sport. I think that it comes from the feeling that one is competing against the wall, not the other climbers. During the competition this weekend I overheard parents praising their children to other parents, as they watched on during the preview portions, as their children talked about the routes to their competitors, working out the moves in their heads together. When it comes down to it, it’s the climber that can pull it all together on the wall, who wins - mental, physical and determination. What great skills for these young athletes to be gaining.

Looking forward to October and the start of another great comp season. Start recruiting your friends and neighbours to join you at the crag or the gym this summer and let’s grow Youth climbing in Canada. Also, keep in mind that the Pan American Youth Climbing Championships have been tentatively scheduled for November, 2010 in Ecuador. We await more news about that in the early Fall. Les ressortissants de la jeunesse 2010 et au-delà de la CCE La Perspective d’un Parent

Centre d'escalade Délire dans la ville de Québec a accueilli des jeunes ressortissants de la CCE cette année le week-end du 4, 5 et 6 juin. Cette année, 123 jeunes athlètes ont fait partie. La plupart des participants sont venus de l'ouest du Canada.

Les routesetters ont fait un travail incroyable de séparer le bloc et les super finales n’étaient pas nécessaires. Merci à tous ceux qui ont fait partie de l'équipage routesetting. Nous sommes reconnaissants au representant de True North Dustin Curtis, qui s'est rendu à Québec pour régler les routes, puis s'élança à Vail, au Colorado, pour représenter le Canada dans la Coupe du monde de bloc de la concurrence à l'IFSC Mountain Jeux Teva. En outre, nous apprécions le soutien de tous les propriétaires de gymnases qui ont permis a leurs setters le temps pour travailler à Délire au cours de cette semaine.

Le gymnase était bien préparé pour l'assaut des compétiteurs, entraîneurs et membres de la famille. Il est bien situé dans un cadre Mall, commode pour les services alimentaires, des magasins a garder les mamans occupées et 10 minutes de loin en voiture du Vieux-Québec. Le gymnase accomode les spectateurs confortablement et a fourni un cadre unique de regarder l'escalade, de toute vue, le long du mur, ainsi, dans leur domaine balcon.

L'escalade .... Incroyable, spectaculaire, une source d'inspiration! Ces enfants ont été reduit en pulpe les routes vraiment difficiles. Pia Graham de Boulderz à Toronto a séduit la foule, d'abord à la femelle de la jeunesse B Demi-finales où elle semblait se renforcer à chaque mouvement, puis de nouveau en finale alors qu'elle était la dernière a grimper dans sa catégorie à sortir de l'ISO, et elle a grimpé bien au-delà de l'ensemble de ses concurrents sur cette route. Cette route qui a été créé pour les juniors, les jeunes femelles A et B, vu Pia grimper pour atteindre deuxieme rang. Peu de temps après l'ascension de Pia, la foule devient frénétique quand Elise Sethna, une jeune grimpeuse du groupe A de la Vision à Canmore, a été la seule point d'envoyer l'itinéraire. Elise vient de connaître un endroit magnifique à terminer deuxième de Tour de Bloc ressortissants en mai. Seulement trois grimpeurs ont surmonté toutes leurs routes ce week-end; Elise Sethna - Jeunesse A, Beth Vince de Peaks St. Catharines 12/13 filles, et Elan Jonas McRae jeunes garçons B. Elan grimpe à Romper Room à Nanaimo. En vitesse d'ascension, nous avons vu des résultats impressionnants. Le plus rapide le long du mur a été Miles Adamson (Jeunesse A) d'Edmonton, a établi un nouveau record de 6,95 secondes dans la categorie de l’ascension de vitesse. Wow! J’attends avec impatience les résultats de Miles aux Championnats du monde. Il est temps que nous reconnaissions ce que le reste du monde sait déjà, que la concurrence d'escalade est composé de trois disciplines et que le Canada devrait être fier de tous nos grimpeurs - difficulté, bloc et vitesse. Beaucoup d'athlètes aux compétitions sanctionnées Voyage international pour soutenir la concurrence dans une seule discipline. Je me réjouis au prochain record de vitesse l'année prochaine. Nous étions tristes de voir que les blessures a Eric Sethna le tracassaient et il n'était pas en mesure de rivaliser. Ayant eu de bons resultats de route, il a été choisi comme membre pour Homme Junior pour l’équipe monde. L'équipe se dirige vers Édimbourg, en Écosse pour l'IFSC Championnats du monde de la jeunesse 9-12 septembre 2010.

Egalement décidé ce week-end ont été les bénéficiaires de la Coupe Canada de la jeunesse. L'an dernier, la CCE a institué la Jeunesse Canada Coupes de reconnaître les réalisations exceptionnelles de jeunes grimpeurs. Le grimpeur dans chaque catégorie d'âge entre les sexes / avec le plus de points à la fin de la saison reçoit le Canada Youth Cup. Ils gardent ces trophées à leur salle de gym pour l'année et les suivantes sont gravés les noms des gagnants de chaque année comme le Voyage Coupes avec les gagnants.

L'été ... pour de nombreux athlètes c’est le temps du repos qui peut comprendre une escalade en plein air tranquille, ou des escalades dans des lieux exotiques pour des vacances, mais pour d'autres cela signifie la formation continue pour les Championnats monde. Le CCE a organisé un camp d'entraînement le week-end pour les athlètes de l'Équipe Worlds à Squamish en Colombie-Britannique. Ils auront la chance de connaître leurs concurrents ainsi que grimper dans l'un des endroits les plus incroyables au Canada. On dirait qu'ils ont un merveilleux week-end prévu. Déjà, quelques jours seulement après ressortissants et je remarque de nouvelles amitiés fleurissent sur Facebook entre Orient et Occident. Quels autres sports voit concurrents, les entraîneurs et les membres de la famille acclamations pour les opposants? Comme les gens se joindre à notre petite communauté qui est toujours quelque chose qui vient dans la conversation. Les parents sont impressionnés par l'approche familiale au sport. Je pense que cela vient du sentiment que l'on est en compétition contre le mur, pas les autres grimpeurs. Pendant la compétition ce week-end j’ai entendu des parents faire des éloges de leurs enfants à d'autres parents, en regardant le cours de la prévisualisation des parties, que leurs enfants ont parlé des routes à leurs concurrents, en travaillant sur les mouvements dans leur tête. Apres tout c’est le grimpeur qui doit relier ensemble sur le mur, qui gagne - mentalement, physiquement et avec beaucoup de détermination. Quelles grandes compétences pour ces jeunes athlètes a acquerir.

Octobre… Le début d'une autre grande saison. Commencer à recruter vos amis et voisins de vous joindre à la falaise ou la salle de gym cet été et nous allons croître les jeunes d'escalade au Canada. De plus, gardez à l'esprit que l'Organisation panaméricaine de la jeunesse Championnats d'escalade ont été provisoirement prévue pour novembre 2010 en Equateur. Before I arrived at the Canadian National Climbing Competition in Quebec City, I was very excited and had a very positive attitude. Once there I met my competitors, I no longer felt so good, and I was a little scared. Once the competition started I regained my confidence, because I just did what I had to do.

A competitor and I became friends at the competition. At the finals I thought my new friend had won, that she had finished the route. I didn’t get to the top of the route, but it turned out that I managed to go much higher than her. I did not know that I had won, until she told me I came in first.

What a good day.

At the end of the day when we received our awards, I was really proud and exhausted. I received first in speed climbing and first in difficulty. I also won the Canadian youth cup for 11 and under girls.

Avant mon arrivée au Concours national canadien d'escalade à Québec, j'etais très excitée et j’avais une attitude très positive. Une fois là, j'ai rencontré mes concurrents, je ne me sentais pas si bien, et j’avais un peu peur. Une fois le concours a commencé j'ai retrouvé ma confiance, parce que j’ai fait ce que j'avais à faire.

Un concurrent et moi sommes devenus amis à la concurrence. Lors de la finale, je pensais que ma nouvelle amie avait gagné, qu'elle avait fini sa route. Je n'ai pas fini la route jusqu’au haut, mais il s'est avéré que j'ai réussi à grimper beaucoup plus haut qu'elle. Je ne savais pas que j'avais gagné, jusqu'à ce qu'elle me dit je suis venue en premier.

Quelle belle journée.

À la fin de la journée où nous avons reçu notre prix, j'étais très fiere et épuisée. J'ai reçu en vitesse et difficulté premier lieu. J'ai aussi gagné la coupe des jeunes canadiens pour les filles 11 ans et moins.

Nous attendions la venue des Nationaux depuis des mois et c’est avec fébrilité que nous avons entamé la compétition. L’ambiance était géniale et les gens, autant compétiteurs et bénévoles que spectateurs, étaient tous de bonne humeur. Même si nous ne nous sommes pas classées dans les premières de nos catégories, nous avons vécu une expérience inoubliable et sommes fières de nos efforts. Nous avons été très impressionnées par la qualité de grimpe de certains jeunes canadiens présents. La compétition était extrêmement bien organisée et les voies étaient extras. De plus, cette compétition nous a permis de créer de nouveaux liens avec des grimpeurs venus de partout au Canada. Bravo aux gagnants!

We had been around the gym that Nationals was held at, for months, and so we were excited but nervous when the competition finally started. The atmosphere was friendly and the people - competitors, volunteers and spectators alike, were all in a good mood. Even if we didn’t place top in our categories, we had an unforgettable experience and were proud of our efforts. We were very impressed by the abilities of the some of the young Canadian climbers who were there. The competition was very well organized and the routes were great. Overall, this competition gave us the chance to try brand new routes, along with climbers from all over Canada. Congratulations to all the winners!

Going to Nationals was a fun experience. I was nervous but also excited to climb. I enjoyed climbing all of my routes. My final route was probably my favourite, although I also liked my semi-final route because it was very long and technical. The atmosphere of the comp was nice because everyone was really friendly. Nationals is special because everything else in the season leads up to it. Winning was exhilarating, because the competition was tough. All the other climbers were really strong.

Aller aux ressortissants a été une expérience amusante. J'étais nerveuse, mais aussi très heureuse de grimper. J'ai bien aimé l'escalade de mon parcours. Mon parcours final a été sans doute mon préféré, mais j'ai aussi aimé ma route en demi-finale parce qu’elle était très longue et technique. L'atmosphère de la maquette était sympa car tout le monde était très amical. Les ressortissants est spécial car tout le reste de la saison conduit à la hauteur. La victoire était exaltante, car la concurrence était rude. Tous les autres grimpeurs ont été très forts.

When I walked in the door, I was amazed at some of the walls and the features. I was really excited and couldn't wait for my turn to climb. I only wish there were more climbs. When my name was called I was very nervous when it was my time for the final climb. I knew I would try my hardest. The best moment was when my name was called and I found out that I had won the Youth Cup! It was a great time!

Quand je suis entré dans la porte, j'ai été surpris par certains des murs et les caractéristiques. J'étais vraiment excité et ne pouvait pas attendre mon tour à grimper. Je souhaite seulement y avait plus de montées. Lorsque mon nom a été appelé J'étais très nerveux quand il a été mon temps pour l'ascension finale. Je savais que j'allais essayer de mon mieux. Le meilleur moment est celui où mon nom a été appelé et j'ai découvert que j'avais gagné la Coupe de la jeunesse! C'était une époque formidable!
